What the calendar asks of the substrate
A crop that seeds on Monday needs a substrate that behaves like the last one. A feed recipe is arithmetic; the fibre must not edit it. Controlled-environment and glasshouse farms plant to the week, and the house prepares and ships to the same discipline.
- Calcium-buffered, so the exchange sites are settled before the crop arrives.
- EC, pH and moisture published per lot, read by an independent laboratory.
- An even, screened grade that wets fast under drip.
- A standing rhythm: the same lot spec, the dated register, a reorder that arrives before the gap does.
The preparation
How the house prepares it
Slabs, plugs and open beds all start from the same pith; what differs is the preparation, and the house states every step of it.
Fresh water first; the loose salts leave in the tanks before anything else is asked of the fibre.
A soak in calcium nitrate, long enough for calcium to take the exchange sites; the displaced sodium and potassium leave with the rinse water.
Graded for slabs, plugs and open beds: fast, even wetting under drip.
An independent laboratory reads every lot, EC, pH, moisture and sand, with the figures before and after the buffer stated.
Planting calendars are promises. The house schedules loadings so the substrate never becomes the excuse.
